Good TED talk about "embodied energy"

The concept of "embodied energy," -- energy that was used in the work of making a product -- is often overlooked in discussions about alternative energies.

If you have six minutes, watch this TED talk in which Catherine Mohr highlights the complexities of this topic as she learned in building a new home:

"Expanding the Niche of Local Food"

If you can lay your hands on the Spring 2010 issue of Permaculture Activist magazine, there's a great article by Peter Bane called "Expanding the Niche of Local Food." Bane is the publisher of Permaculture Activist, and also served for a time on the Peak Oil Task Force that was commissioned by the Bloomington, Indiana Common Council. The article summarizes some of the report's findings and recommendations, many of which likely apply to Seattle… Continue

Hi Leo,

Re: finding local peeps.
Les says hi. He said it's possible to include a new field in the ADVANCED MEMBER SEARCH to be able to find people by their area code or area.

Please let me know how to do that, so that I can do it on a smaller Transition ning, Phinney (soon to come.)

Hi Leo,

Thanks for making the Transition Seattle ning!

I'm very eager to be active and be a member of a small initiating group, host films, etc. in my neighborhood, but there is no area code question in the profiles to help me find my buddy/buddies! Could you please add that as an indicator on this ning? I think it would have a lot less people asking one another where they're active/looking to be active.

Determined to find my peeps nearby,
Thankful for you over yonder,
~Briana

I'd love to have someone from Transition Seattle, WA, Cascadia, etc. come and speak formally at a Sustainable Burien meeting. We love to have speakers because our group is sort of a mix of new people to the sustainability movement and old hats, like me. :)
Would you, or do you know someone who would, like to speak?

Hi Leo,

Interested in finding TT speakers for our April Board meeting and also moving forward on TT Seattle (or a neighborhood approach). Do you know of any locals who have been trained as TT facilitators?

Looking forward to meeting you,

Hi Leo... great bunch from Seattle here. We've had so many inquiries of Washington, I'm wondering if it's time to set up Transition Washington -- as we've done for Transition Colorado. We talked briefly about this once before. Would you be interested in creating a site for the state?
